Sq. Ft.
Step One
Measure the length of the area in question with a tape measure. Jot this down on a piece of paper. Label this measurement “length.”
Step Two
Get the width of the area. Write this down, and label it “width.”
Step Three
Multiply the length by the width.
Step Four
You now have the square footage.
Laminate
Laminate floors are usually less expensive than wood or natural stone flooring, and are a reasonable solution for a do-it-yourself homeowner to install. Each plank or tile is clicks into one another, without the use of glue, staples, nails, or cementitious compounds. Installed laminate floors typically "float" over the sub-floor on top of a foam/film underlayment, which is meant to provide moisture & sound reducing properties.
Engineered Wood
Engineered wood, also called composite wood, "man made wood" or "manufactured wood", includes a range of derivative wood products which are manufactured by binding together the strands, particles, fibers, or veneers of wood, together with adhesives, to form composite materials. These products are engineered to precise design specifications which are tested to meet national or international standards.
They are more expensive to produce than solid lumber in terms of time and money. They also require use of an adhesive for instalation.
Hardwood
The flooring product is pre-finished in a factory. The products that are pre-finished are often a polyurethane finish that has added aluminium oxide, however some companies use titanium dioxide or other oxides instead. These metal oxide finishes are used in various types of floor coverings and increase the wear a hardwood floor can handle.
Solid hardwoods are typically 3/4" or 19mm thick, although some do come in 3/8" (10mm) or 5/16" (8mm) thicknesses. This type of hardwood flooring can be installed with a nail-down installation method over wood subfloors.
Since hardwoods expand and contract in the width of the grain, this type of hardwood flooring is not recommended to be installed over a concrete slab.
Bamboo
The bamboo is split and flattened, dried, and then laminated in layers with glue under high pressure. Manufactured bamboo floors are typically made available in planks with either vertical or horizontal grain orientation.
The two major colors are natural, and carbonized. The process of steaming bamboo under a controlled pressure and temperature is called carbonization in which the material changes into brownish.
Bamboo is durable and has a graet resistance to insects and moisture. Bamboo is an eco-friendly, highly renewable source of material, as the bamboo plant (technically a grass) reaches maturity in considerably less time than the trees used to make wood floors.
Cork
Cork used in the manufacture of cork flooring comes from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. The bark is harvested by peeling it away from the trunk and branches every 9 - 12 years and does not necessitate the felling of the tree. Unlike other types of trees that may die when they have their bark removed, the Cork–Oak survives and will grow back its bark again within a decade. As these trees can live to 200 years or more it means that the cork can be harvested many times over, which makes it an ideal material for the manufacture of a wide variety of products, the most common clearly being cork floors and wine corks.
Cork flooring is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the leading alternative types of flooring. Why? Because besides cork being an environmentally sound material it has a wealth of other natural features that appeal to homeowners.
Green building brings together a vast array of practices, techniques and materials to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. Everyday, buildings and structures are dismantled across the country.
Fortunately, the deconstruction industry continues to grow and salvage materials are increasing in popularity due to enviromentally cautious consumers. Tile, some wood, laminate, bamboo, cork and glass are some of the Green products that are available for special order.
